Hi Guys and Girls

Just wondered if anyone had a good book or any good advice on what should be done the week prior to a race - like tappering down and what exactly that should mean??? Confused

My next race is the round the houses 10k and so I am looking to do the best preparation possible to give me the best chance at a good time.

Any advice would be very welcome!  Or please let me know if you have a book I could borrow.

Many thanks

Angela  Smile

It will vary depending on the distance of the race.
For a marathon most would cut down on mileage  to about 70% of normal distance for 2 weeks before and maybe do 2-3 short runs the week before.
For a 10K most wouldnt taper at all. Probably dont run the day before and no long runs the week before but anything more than that is not necessary.
I guess a half M would be somewhere in between the above.
Everyone is different so be prepared to find what suits you best and not what people or books say you should do.
I wont be at the next time trial but I dare say lots of us have books we can lend you. I wil bring one to the next time trial I am at.
I am at the end of a significant taper at the moment. I have run once since Sunday on Wed for 6m. Its the Glasgow-Edinburgh race tomorrow (54m) so wish me luck.

The Competitive Runners Handbook by Bob Glover is good and full of top tips.  Kaz has my copy at the moment but worth getting your own copy as it covers all distances of races plus some chapters on strategy, tactics, food, training etc etc.

Would recommend it!

Hi Angela,

First of all -best of luck with Grangemouth its a good route - will be good for fast time- r u on track? - sub 40?

I will not make it been out for a week and the training hasn't went to plan.  However 9 weeks away the Pollok 10k will be the one.

As for the pre race advice I tend to go a run mon and wed as usual then rest wiith maybe some stretching fri or saturday- but it is whatever works for yourself.  Perhaps review your training diary and look at what you did before a really good race.

Best of luck

Phil,
thank you for the advice, think that will be what I'll try to do for my 10K pre race  training!  Well done doing the Glasgow to edinburgh race - that is really something!

Ali - thanks as well and I'll be on amazon later to see if can get a copy!

Alan - just trying to get over a chesty cold so hope might run in next few days but already had a week off - so don't think will make grangemouth Crying or Very sad   best of luck with training and I look forward to hearing about pollock 10K.  my next will be Kinross and Balfron at then end of April.

Thanks

Angela
