Well I did it ,completed the Budapest marathon last sunday in 5hrs 1 min 21 secs (by my time, havent been able to find official times yet!)
Not exactly record breaking but a lifes ambition, fulfilled THANK YOU fellow harriers for helping me achieve it & for sponsoring my fund raising for CLICSargent too.
It was a race of 2 parts with the 1st 24 km being quite comfortable through the world heritage sights of Budapest & along the Danube,I even followed the 4hr 30 pace setters but then the heat hit me 28c or maybe it was that' wall ' I kept reading about.Anyway I  had to abandom any hopes of ' time' & just concentrate on getting round without succumbing to heat exhaustion.Sheer Endurance !
Thankfully my husband is pretty sturdy & was able to aid his hobbling wife back to the hotel spa where I spent the next 24hrs trying to loosen up my seized up muscles. The most painful part was getting on & off the loo! My quads !Why is this not documented along side the dreaded'wall'.
So am i glad I did it - absolutely! Will I do it again NEVER!
For my fellow monday am joggers there will be celebratory cake on monday after your run.I plan to enjoy a leisurely walk with my dogs .Hope to see you there.Fiona.x

Never doubted you for a minute! Well done, lady - you are awesome! An inspiration - getting through marathon training is not to be underestimated.

Hope the thighs are easing up a little - they don't document an inability to get off the loo or come down a flight of stairs as you would never line up at the start! Still it is worth it for the sense of pride you feel when you have achieved something you set out to do.

Take it easy and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Budapest.

Kaz

Well done Fiona.  That's a great effort.  You can now call yourself a marathon runner, which is a brilliant achievement.  Hope your legs are feeling a little less fragile now!  Ian

Well done Fiona.  You must be very proud and sore.  The pain makes it all worth it.  Which is also testament to the hard work you have put in.

As for never again evryone who runs a marathon says that after the first!!

Very very well done Fiona - a really fantastic effort! Very Happy

Wooden legs will ease up - keep walking and moving - from my experience that really helps. Confused

Hopefully see you monday.

Outstanding effort Fiona, well done!

You can get your official result here:

The chip time they give for you is 5:01:20 - some going for a runner with shin splints!

Just wanted to add my congratulations Fiona.
I too ran my 1st Marathon in 28deg and it does make a massive difference to your performance. I suspect if you had been running in a drizzly 14deg you would have been close to your 4h 30min.
Doesnt really matter though does it. Finishing these things is what counts.
Phil.

Well done Fiona.  A wonderful achievement and for an excellent cause too.

I completely understand the 'never again' feeling as that's how I felt after my first (and last!) marathon in 2002.  But I'm starting to think it might be a possibility for me again.  Give yourself some time and you might want to do it again some day  Very Happy
