Stirling DuathlonWill and I both completed the Stirling duathlon on Sunday 5 October. This year the event was split in to two concurrent races, the Scottish Duathlon Championship race (10k run, 40k bike, 5k run) and the Sprint Distance race (5k run, 20k bike, 5k run).
I took part in the sprint distance race - my first multi sport event - and finished in 1hr 44.50 which I was pretty pleased with and relieved I was not last! I really enjoyed the experience helped by glorious weather and a great set up at Stirling University. I was pretty nervous before the start as there is so much more to think about than standing on the start line for a running event - getting your bike kit set up in transition, remembering all the rules, pacing yourself on the first run etc etc. Not to mention seeing all these pro's turn up with their top of the range bikes and aero helmets which can be a bit imtimidating to say the least!! Have not been put off by the experience and will be back next year to work on getting my time down , especially the bike section which was definitely my weakest section going by the number of people who passed me on the road.
Will was 19th in the Championship race and 7th vet in a time of 2hrs 03.58
He was happy with his result particularly given the trouble he had with his shorts (dodgy waist elastic) and numb hands after the cycle which meant he could not get his helmet off and his running shoes on for the final 5k run!
(The photo on the winning pro's website shows what he was up against!!Serious 'bike bling'!)http://www.frasercartmell.com/
The winning times were 1hr52.02 for the Championship race and 1hr13.20 for the sprint race.
All in all a good morning out - I highly recommend it for anyone else who fancies trying something new.
