Edinburgh Marathon 31st May 2009 I am very pleased to say I completed the Edinburgh Marathon yesterday!...
I was very slow, a lot slower than I thought!....It was very hot!...I had a blister on my right foot by mile 5 (due to new trainers which I thought I’d ran enough miles in…obviously not!).. Kirsty and my son Creag were my support team…but I couldn’t meet up with them until mile 12…by then I had a couple blisters on my right foot…I stuck on a couple of compede plasters and headed off in my old trainers….
By mile 17 I could walk almost as fast as I could run, so I ran/walked for next few miles in the scorching heat….by mile 21 I could feel blisters on my left foot (Note:- I have only ever had one blister ever before and that was 2 years ago on a long run with horrible new socks which I binned as soon as I got home!...So blisters weren’t a concern to me at all…I think the heat had something to do with it.).
I saw several people fall by the wayside and get treated by ambulance personnel…I was NOT going to be one of them!
Apart from the sore feet I felt surprisingly fine throughout, I drank gallons of water and some Lucozade ‘run fuel’ …I tried to run in the shade wherever possible, but there wasn’t much available.
I just plodded on to the finish line…I ran in to the stadium, of course
My time was a very slow 6 hours 31 mins…..I had expected to be at least an hour quicker….but I said from the start that I didn’t care about the time, I just wanted to finish with a smile on my face.
I cannot tell you how happy I am to have completed it……I now intend to train properly for the Inverness Marathon in October…hopefully it will be a bit cooler!

This morning I feel great, a wee bit stiff, pesky blisters are a bit jaggy and my face is very red and sun burnt …lol….
I have no idea how you proper runners do such enormous mileage, up freakin mountains, so often and so fast!?!.... Respect!

Well done, George.
So glad you survived the heat and didn't end up, like you said, one of the collapsed on the side of the road!

Well done George.
I ran my 1st marathon (as did Phil M) in similar conditions and it makes a massive difference when its that hot.
Finishing these things is what its all about. You are now a "marathon runner" and no one can take that away from you.
Loch Ness will be much cooler and yesterdays experience will help enormously when you do that.
Enjoy a well earned rest.

Very well done George - I would not have wanted to run a marathon in that heat. Brilliant effort to keep going with those blisters...ouch!

Great effort, George.
I can't imagine running a marathon in that heat. I mowed the lawn yesterday and that was enough for me.
Congratulations and take a well deserved rest for a few days.

Excellent stuff George and very well done. I was thinking about you running in that heat - it must have been a right struggle. Many congratulations on working your way through it. Now put your feet up and enjoy the recovery period - you have earned it

Great stuff, George - and what foresight to bring your old trainers! I'd volunteer to keep you company round Loch Ness but the Tryst is the following week and, never having run a marathon, it'd take me at least a month to recover.... Maybe we'll come and cheer, if that'd be OK.
