Controversy at The Knock

Well if you’re bored of reading about MP Expenses this may interest you…

Reliable sources inform me that the first place granted to Joe Symonds (HBT) was questioned by the other contenders. Joe apparently took the wrong route but nevertheless was granted the top prize, resulting I’m told, in other prize winners returning the money.  Not too sure why Joe went the wrong way, although another friend who placed considerably higher than me did say that he had to slow and ask the following runner for directions at one point on the far side of the second hill.  I was passed by Joe going in the opposite direction (if he was wearing No 19) on the track through the plantation on the second hill.  Apparently one of the organisers took the view that while Joe had not completed the official course the route he had taken was equal to if not greater in length than the official course and given his significant lead over second place Bob Wiseman (Ochil) it was decided by the race officials to grant Joe the win.

My only question is whose time will be used by Phil M to calculate the Club Championship points?

1. Joe Symonds (HBT) 00:29:43
2. Bob Wiseman (Ochil) 00:31:20

Oh, and does it many any difference?

5 Strathearn Harriers listed as taking part, ably supported by Gordon (not running as in recovery mode) and Jim (not running as ‘I hate this course’) at the start and Liz at the top of the Knock on the two occasions I visited it.  Jim also made an appearance on one of the corners on the roads coming back down through Crieff although I don’t recall which one.  Well done to Digby as first Harrier home.

Places & Times:

14. Digby Sym 00:36:12
36. Fred McCain 00:41:47
37. Matt McLay 00:42:14
44. James Bussey 00:43:30
48. Cathy Tilbrook 00:44:39

Apologies if I have missed any runners or supporters.

What a shambles!

Every year there's something. One year the marshals sent half the race the wrong (quicker) way off the Knock down to the Rec and last year there was also complete chaos at the prize-giving with competitors having much more of an idea of who the prize-winners were than the organizers did. How hard can it be when there's only 30 or so runners in the race?

I'm not sure how the organizers can be so sure Joe Symonds ran longer than the course since I bet he has absolutely no idea where he went either. Sounds to me like he should have been DQed...

However, as far as the championship is concerned, I don't really have any choice but to go with the official results as determined by the organizers.

BTW. I'm with Jim on this one. Poor organization, too much running through town and an unimaginative course. Personally, I'd be happy to take this off the list of championship races and put Kinnoull Hill back on - such a shame that the local race is such a dog's breakfast! I just hope that the competitors understand it's nothing to do with the Harriers!

While I'm ranting...

The organizers from the "Strathearn" Recreation Centre decide that "local" = Crieff - scuppered me when living in Comrie in 2004 and, it seems, scuppered Cathy this year.

Seems the controversy continued!

“The race organisers apologise for the confusion over results and the subsequent delay in confirming the final placings.  Following a number of comments from competitors, advice was taken and we can now clarify that the prizes have been awarded to the first males and females to have completed the correct course and cross the line, regardless of age, and the veteran prizes awarded thereafter.  Any prizes not received by participants thus far will be sent out to the appropriate competitors as soon as possible”
